At SBB, we know how important individual, tailored ways of working are for you and your needs. As such, SBB offers various ways of working part-time. In agreement with your manager, you can decide which model works best for you and your personal situation.

Part-time and part-time on a trial basis.

You decide whether you wish to reduce your working hours on a daily, weekly or annual basis. You can also test whether a reduced workload would provide a better work-life balance for you, your family, friends, sporting activities or any other type of personal commitment on a three-month trial basis.

Job sharing.

You work part-time, sharing a full-time position with a colleague. 

Take advantage of flexible working options to work from home or on a mobile basis while on the move. This can make it easy to achieve the right work-life balance.

Childcare.

For us, work-life balance starts even before your employment relationship with us. If on the day of your interview you have last-minute problems with childcare, please contact us. We will arrange a replacement for you with our partner organisation Profawo.

With Kidz Care, we help you to organise and finance childcare outside of your family. Depending on income, Kidz Care means up to 90% of your childcare costs are taken care of. 

As an employee of SBB, you can make use of all the advisory and placement services offered by Profawo free of charge. Profawo helps if you have questions, or require information, and offers childcare and help with finding nannies, for example, as well as school holiday programmes for your children.

We are proud of our child-friendly workplaces. So in case you have to participate in an unplanned meeting, we have boxes of toys waiting for your children.

Child allowance.

Your child allowance for your first child amounts to CHF 320, independent of which canton you live in. This is because SBB makes up the difference in every instance.

Holiday.

SBB helps with balancing career and family. As such, mothers receive 18 weeks of paid maternity leave after the birth of their child and fathers can take 20 paid days of leave within a year of the birth. We also offer 10 paid days of leave if you adopt. This gives everyone the time they need to settle into parenthood.

There is also the possibility to take three months’ unpaid parental leave during the first six years of your child’s life.

Furthermore – so long as it’s operationally feasible – unpaid leave can be taken in single days, short blocks or over one long period.

Tailored to your needs.

We want to actively support you in your work-family balance on several levels. So we also deal with topics to do with becoming a father and fatherhood. From questions on the role of a father to parenting as partners: we’re pulling in the same direction as you.

All mothers, particularly those aiming for a management role, are offered support through a wide range of programmes, talks and panel discussions. SBB also offers workshops where we discuss the topic of developing one’s professional career path. But women also have the opportunity to network and talk to one another on a personal level.

Do you have questions about combining your career and private life? The expert organisation UND helps all employees and their partners to answer those questions. Counselling is free and is carried out in German, French or Italian in Bern, Lucerne and Zurich.

Is your head spinning? Is a strain in your working or private life getting too much? Our social counselling is there for you and your family. Specialists help you along in a skilled and discrete manner. Counselling is bound to the usual standards of confidentiality.

Child allowance, social counselling and fund.

If you encounter health-related, social or professional challenges which lead to financial difficulties, our social support will be there for you. 

In times of financial emergency, all current and retired SBB employees and their families receive support from the Stiftung Personalfond foundation. From interest-bearing loans to non-repayable contributions – together, we find a solution.

This also includes the offer of further discounted holidays and leisure activities, preventative services and grants.

Use saved-up time for your family.

Over the course of your employment at SBB, you can independently save up time or money in a long-term account. You can then use these at an ideal time for you to better combine your work and your private life. This may include an extended holiday or a short-term reduction in working hours to dedicate more time to your family, friends or your favourite hobby. You decide how you would like to use your saved-up time.
