The Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the world, has been in operation since 2016. The opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel in 2020 completed the flat railway route through the Alps.
With a mind to the resulting increase in demand expected on the Gotthard route, SBB ordered 29 Giruno multiple unit trains from Stadler. As of May 2021, the fleet is complete and all vehicles are in operation.
- The Giruno offers passengers a total of 810 seats across up to 400 metres when two trainsets are coupled together. The trains are equipped with low-floor access from the different platform heights in Switzerland, Austria and Italy (all at 55cm) and Germany (76cm). This is a first for SBB for a single-deck multiple unit.
- It has twice as many wheelchair-accessible seats and toilets as actually required by the Disability Discrimination Act.
- The trains have good mobile phone reception, Wi-Fi, power sockets at every seat, large luggage storage spaces, gender-separated toilets and a modern lighting system with energy-saving LED lamps. The entire interior is designed to be light and airy.
- The 29th and final Giruno was delivered on 10 May 2021. The fleet is now complete.
