Future Zurich S-Bahn projects.

During rush hour capacity in the S-Bahn trains is stretched to its limit. At present 400,000 people commute in and out of Zurich every day, and the trend is upwards. The capacity of the rail network around Zurich, and of Zurich’s main station, has more or less reached its limit.

The cross-city link.

But a solution is at hand: From mid-2014 the Zurich cross-city link line and the second through-station, Löwenstrasse, will create the extra capacity in the centre of Zurich. By routing trains along new tracks from Altstetten via Zurich HB and through the Weinberg Tunnel in the direction of Oerlikon, the cross-city link line will relieve congestion in the city of Zurich. Construction began in 2007.

Fourth phase of the upgrade.

At the same time, the Zurich S-Bahn's fourth upgrade programme involves investment all over the greater Zurich region. The cross-city link line and the fourth phase of the S-Bahn expansion will create scope for new S-Bahn and long-distance travel opportunities. For instance, new S-Bahn lines and better connections will be come into operation between 2014 and 2018. A half-hourly service will become standard throughout the canton, with the possibility of 15-minute intervals within Zurich and its inner suburbs. Moreover, the new through-station obviates the need for many S-Bahn trains to turn around at Zurich HB, which significantly reduces travel times. These measures should be able to satisfy growth in demand for Zurich S-Bahn services in the coming years. In this way the S-Bahn will remain the backbone of public transport in the greater Zurich region.

2G: Zurich S-Bahn goes Second Generation.

As part of the fourth upgrade programme for the Zurich S-Bahn, capacity on several lines is being increased. Although necessary, even this expansion is not sufficient on its own as demand continues to increase and potential bottlenecks are already apparent. Zurich S-Bahn 2G is a flagship project that will set the planning direction once the fourth upgrade programme is completed. The goals of S-Bahn 2G, which will be implemented in stages from 2030 onwards, is to double the capacity of the Zurich S-Bahn network. Achieving this will require better utilisation of the existing infrastructure. The plan calls for a system based on an inner S-Bahn in the core network of cities and their immediate commuter catchment areas. This core network should function particularly efficiently, offering at least a 15-minute service. The plan calls for new single-deck vehicles that will allow passengers to get in and out quickly. This is indispensable for a dependable service. The core S-Bahn will be supplemented by express S-Bahn trains stopping at only a limited number of stations in the core zone. Outside this zone the trains will stop at all stations just as other services do. As the express train passengers will generally have longer travel times, these trains will be continue to be made up of double-deck vehicles that offer more seating. It is planned that the express trains will offer at least a half-hourly service.
