GSM-R.

The SBB mobile telecommunications network.

The GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railways) digital communications platform is a cornerstone of SBB’s innovation strategy. In future the new technology will cover all the mobile voice and data services for SBB’s train radio system, thus meeting a key precondition for transferring more traffic from road to rail, further expanding public transport and simplifying cross-border services.

GSM-R is a digital radio system that has been specially developed for railways. Based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology widely used in mobile telecommunications, GSM-R expands on GSM, adding features specifically designed for trains. GSM-R frequencies have been standardised internationally and are exclusively reserved for use by railways. To that end, it represents an important step forward for railway operations in Switzerland and throughout Europe.
