Andreas Meyer – an entrepreneur with passion and drive.

Born in Basel in 1961, Andreas Meyer studied law at the universities of Basel and Freiburg. After passing his bar exam, he continued his studies at the prestigious INSEAD business school in France, where he was awarded an MBA. Since 1 January 2007 he has been CEO of Swiss federal Railways (SBB AG), Switzerland's largest transport corporation. He is particularly committed to SBB’s 33,000-plus employees and to environmental protection.

Career milestones.

Andreas Meyer began his career in 1990 as legal counsel for ABB Switzerland, subsequently being appointed assistant to the Executive Board and project manager for the Zurich-based environmental technology firm W+E Umwelttechnik. In 1996 Meyer became managing director of German industrial corporation Babcock-IKR. There, he was responsible among other things for a number of challenging restructuring and crisis management tasks.

In 1997 he transferred to the DB Energie subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG. As CEO of this company from 2000, he amalgamated DB’s entire energy operations, comprising seven different units, into Germany's fifth largest full-service energy supplier.

From 2000 to 2002, Andreas Meyer was also a member of the management of Deutsche Bahn's rail technology division, and in 2003 he joined the company's services division.

In 2004, he was appointed CEO of DB Stadtverkehr GmbH. As head of the Stadtverkehr (urban transit) business area and a member of the Board of Management of DB Personenverkehr GmbH he, together with his management teams, developed market entry strategies for S-Bahn, urban rail and city bus services in Germany, adjoining areas of neighbouring countries, and a number of other EU countries. From 2005, he was also a member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Bahn AG.

On 23 June 2006, he was chosen to succeed Benedikt Weibel as CEO of SBB AG.

Family.

Andreas Meyer is married with three children and lives near Berne. He and his brother grew up in a railway family in Birsfelden, Canton of Basel-Land.

Leisure.

In his free time, Andreas Meyer enjoys a number of sports, notably jogging, hiking, cycling and ski touring. He uses his three or four training sessions a week to relax and recharge his batteries.
