Fit for the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

SBB prepared 3,900 staff to face the new challenges of the Gotthard tunnel.

The complexity of the Gotthard Base Tunnel made it a demanding project for the approximately 3,100 employees from SBB and other railway operators. Whether engine drivers, train crews, tunnel maintenance teams, company fire services, rail service staff or tunnel operators, SBB offered comprehensive NRLA training to prepare its employees for these new challenges and for working conditions in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. An additional 800 external emergency rescue staff also received targeted training.

SBB created around 140 new jobs at its two maintenance and repair centres in Erstfeld and Biasca – including positions for workers who maintain the tunnel’s state-of-the-art electrical systems.
