Geneva Cornavin – Advance upgrades.
Geneva railway station, which is currently showing signs of severe congestion, has to handle three different rail systems: the Swiss, French and RER regional rail networks.
The station currently has seven through platforms (five for Swiss RER and long-distance services, and two for French services) plus one dead-end line for RER traffic between Geneva and La Plaine. Once the Léman Express rail link becomes operational, it will not be possible to upgrade any national or international long-distance services or RER services, hence the need to develop the Geneva hub in the long term. In order to implement the Geneva Cornavin station extension project, three advance upgrades are required.
