Having the technical conditions for network access checked by SBB Infrastructure's Technical Network Access unit (TNZ) is an essential pre-condition for access to the IM's rail network.

The focus of any investigation by the TNZ's independent experts is on ensuring compatibility between the vehicles and Infrastructure's equipment and systems with the aim of guaranteeing the safe and reliable interaction of the overall system.

Vehicle antennas (currently in German only)	For safety reasons, only antennas that fulfil the requirements described in regulation I-50228 may be used on rail vehicles running on the standard-gauge network of SBB Infrastructure and other Swiss infrastructure managers. The list of approved vehicle antennas is appended as Annex C, an integral part of I-50228.

As a pre-condition for train path allocation, vehicle data must be entered into SBB Infrastructure's rolling stock database as early as possible in the network access process (allocation of a drive type). The data will be used for planning and operational journey time calculations as well as for other operationally relevant purposes.

Following the introduction of the basic price for wear into the train-path pricing system as of 2017, the Ordinance on Rail Network Access issued by the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (RNAO-FOT; SR 742.122.4) requires that vehicle-specific prices be calculated.

In most cases, test runs are required to provide the documentary evidence necessary for vehicle approval. For all runs not covered by the Implementing Provisions to the Railways Ordinance (IP-RailO), e.g. those run at excess speed, authorisation is required from the infrastructure manager and, depending on the extent of the overrun, from the FOT.
