Settlement and transport areas threaten and fragment natural habitats, reducing their ecological functionality and putting pressure on indigenous flora and fauna. SBB is contributing to this trend with its railway and energy infrastructure, real estate and planned construction projects. At the same time, areas alongside railway lines and around SBB properties create valuable connections between various habitats. With this in mind, SBB implements a variety of measures in different areas to protect and support biodiversity in line with the Swiss Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
