Safety officer – safety has top priority.

As a safety officer, you are responsible for safety when work is taking place in the track area.

Together with your team, you implement the specified safety measures, maintain an overview and ensure that safe railway operations are always guaranteed in the area of the work site. Your job is as varied as your place of work. As a safety officer, you work outdoors and your job takes you along some of the most beautiful railway lines in Switzerland.

Your tasks.

The job of a safety officer includes the following tasks:

As the contact person for safety at work on the construction site, you are responsible for ensuring that railway operations in the work area remain safe.
You are responsible for the protection of staff, materials and equipment, by compiling and implementing safety directives.
You coordinate communication with relevant points of contact (by telephone/radio), instruct the team and organise safety wardens to give warnings as required.
You report unexpected incidents to construction site officers and are deployed regionally to different locations.

Paid basic training as a safety officer.

You learn everything you need to know for the job as a safety officer during the paid training course. This starts with basic training as a safety warden, which lasts 30 days. You learn the theory of how to identify risks and which safety regulations apply, then you put this into practice under guidance directly on the construction site. After successful completion of this stage, you are able to work independently in the track area and know all the important protection measures. During the training, you are already part of the SBB team and can take advantage of all employee benefits. Training is especially practical: learning is step by step; you are supported, tested and earn a respected qualification.

Further training to become a safety officer.

When you have successfully completed the basic training as a safety warden, you are ready for the next step: further training to become a safety officer. In three days of theory and four days of practice, you deepen your knowledge and management skills so that, as a safety officer, you can take the lead on safety tasks on construction sites in your region. This further training makes you very versatile. Many safety wardens also use this qualification as a step to becoming safety managers or team leaders, taking on more responsibility. Your tasks are as varied as your workplace. As a safety officer, you look after your region and are deployed wherever work is being carried out in the track area. This means you experience Switzerland in a unique way. It’s important that you love working outdoors: after all, safety is always required, come rain, wind or sun. You overcome bad weather with quality equipment, a positive attitude and a calm manner. Flexibility is essential. Many jobs can only be undertaken when rail traffic is restricted so, if necessary, they are completed at night or at weekends. No two days are the same and you are often deployed to different sites at short notice.

Safety officers bear a great deal of responsibility. A high degree of reliability and the willingness to take on responsibility are therefore among the main requirements. You should also be assertive and able to concentrate. As a team player, you communicate openly and have the empathy needed to positively shape cooperation with colleagues and other teams.

You must also meet the following requirements:

You consider irregular working times, sometimes at weekends, and/or shift work to be a benefit that allows you to shape your free time flexibly.
You must be able to use a range of digital tools (iPad and iPhone) and applications and be willing to continually learn and develop your skills.

We require that you have unimpaired sight and hearing.
Good to very good oral and written knowledge (B2) of the language of the region of deployment. Other national languages are an advantage.

Remuneration system.

We have a fair and progressive remuneration system. We reward individual performance, take the nature of the job market into account, and create transparency. We have also been awarded the We Pay Fair label.

The gross salary per month including the thirteen month’s wage depends on age, experience and location.

We determine your salary level based on your qualifications, age and professional experience. The starting salary is at least CHF 3,703 (without a completed apprenticeship) and at most CHF 4,004 (with a completed apprenticeship). The maximum salary is CHF 5,434 (without a completed apprenticeship) and CHF 5,876 (with a completed apprenticeship). This salary is paid thirteen times and excludes the following perks.

Extra pay and allowances.

As a safety officer, you also benefit from attractive night and Sunday bonuses. These vary depending on your shift plan. SBB implements preventative health measures, including for shift work.

You receive monetary compensation for working irregular hours (CHF 6/hour for night work and CHF 16/hour for Sunday work).
An additional time supplement of 10 to 30% is granted for night shifts. You can use this time to take additional holiday.
The flat-rate subsistence allowance is CHF 19 per day.
The child allowance is CHF 320 (CHF 215 for each additional child).

Your individual pay will be determined by applying the pay system in our collective employment agreement when you sign your employment contract.
