A photovoltaic system has been installed on the south side of the car park roof. This is a combined shade provider and power plant, producing up to 190,000 kWh of clean electricity from solar energy each year, which corresponds to the annual electricity requirements of around 40 households.

The modules are easily assembled and can be reused later within a sustainable circular economy. In future, the solar energy will be used for the P+Rail facility and also fed into the municipal grid. What’s more, 10 solar-powered charging points for electric cars will soon be available at the railway station. 

Green is the new grey! Many paved areas are now completely or at least partially unpaved and blooming. Whether between the buildings, in the car park or on the roofs and building exteriors, small ecological niches have been created everywhere, serving as habitats for flora and fauna.

The available structures serve as sources of food or places to live, thereby supporting native birds and various insects such as butterflies, bees, beetles and other small creatures.

An initial interim assessment by Bern University of Applied Sciences confirms that the newly remodelled areas and elements are adding ecological value to the area around Delémont railway station.

More trees, hedges, plant troughs, green façades and roofs make a valuable contribution to reducing heat in the city. Water evaporates from plants and contributes to natural cooling. Plants also provide shade, such as in the new seating area with leafy canopies.

The greenery around the station, including grass paving in the car park, has turned Delémont station into an urban oasis of wellbeing.

By 2030, SBB intends to halve its operational CO₂ emissions compared to base year 2018 and become climate-neutral by 2040. This is why we are investing in customised fossil-fuel-free heating solutions for each station.

Instead of oil, Delémont station is now heated with wood pellets. These get their heat generation energy from a renewable raw material and burn efficiently.

By unsealing paved surfaces, we are also making an important contribution to soil protection. It means that rainwater no longer flows into the sewage system but can seep into the ground and keep the groundwater level stable.

Rainwater is absorbed by the soil like a sponge and stored there. In dry conditions, the soil releases the water to the surrounding plants or can prevent flooding during heavy rainfall.
