We are the backbone of Switzerland with firm control of the railways.
10,000 SBB Infrastructure staff help bring 1.25 million passengers and 250,000 tonnes of goods to their destination safely, on time and in comfort. Every day, round the clock, now and in the future.

SBB Infrastructure’s two main tasks.
We develop the timetable and allow trains to run.
We develop proposals for network expansion for the Confederation. On the basis of these proposals we develop the timetable for passenger and freight services. We manage rail traffic from four train-control centres – all day and all night. In case of disruption, we minimise the impact passengers and freight providers feel. We ensure customer information is provided at stations and on trains.
We also provide the rail, energy and telecommunications networks needed.
Our goal is reliable and affordable rail infrastructure – for the present and the future. We define how the installations on our three networks should look in the future. The installations encompass tunnels, bridges, software, power plants and much more. We continuously build, expand and modernise them so that we can offer our customers attractive services. We operate our networks and monitor them round the clock. If there is disruption or an installation has to be maintained, we take the necessary steps. To make all this possible, we procure specific goods and services for the railway. These include ballast and maintenance vehicles. We produce rail technology products such as points and signals and transport them.
Railway tradition combined with the innovative spirit to shape the future of railways – SBB develops products and services for powerful railways. SBB products have already proven their worth on Europe’s busiest rail network, the Swiss network. Join us and benefit from over 100 years of railway knowledge and our well thought-out solutions for the entire railway industry. From Switzerland for the whole world.
Electrical power plays a vital role for SBB – whether it is traction current that flows through the overhead lines, or domestic electricity to supply stations, office buildings and shops. Without power no trains can run and stations remain in darkness. The electricity supply is therefore extremely important for SBB.
We build and run the SBB Infrastructure telecommunications networks and are responsible for their smooth, secure operations. SBB, private railways, third-party customers and operations-related facilities count on our robust, state-of-the-art technology.
Around 600 sidings connect small and large manufacturers, as well as logistics centres, directly to SBB’s rail network. Almost 90% of conventional rail goods transport involves the use of these sidings. They represent an important cornerstone for transferring freight from road to rail.
