SBB's online timetable contains an «Ecocalculator» which calculates the energy consumption and CO₂ emissions for each rail trip and compares them with the equivalent journey by car. In that way, you can obtain a fast and easy comparison of the environmental impact of each form of travel. You simply click on the «Ecocalculator» button in the detailed view of the journey.

The calculation is based on default average figures for capacity utilisation and fuel consumption. You can adjust these as required, so for a car, for example, you can specify the emission class, size and efficiency. As well as direct energy consumption, the system also takes account of the indirect ecological impact arising from the construction, maintenance and disposal of infrastructure and vehicles. Alternative forms of motive power such as biogas and electric vehicles are also covered.

Using the SBB transport mode comparison tool, you can test the environmental impact of a variety of transport modes and motive power systems.

The comparison of the different modes of transport generates figures for a journey of 100 kilometres. It is based on the Ecoinvent ecological impact database, which takes account of specific vehicles, roads and tracks as well as the direct use of motive power. The comparison thus also factors in the production, operation and disposal of the infrastructure and material required, taking account of environmental impact across the entire life cycle.

The web-based Mobitool is a platform developed by SBB and its partners to help companies organise their corporate travel more efficiently and hence to reduce their environmental impact. Mobitool covers all types of transport and travel: customer shipments and travel, business travel, freight logistics and commuting.

The "Mobicheck" – a rough estimate of environmental impact – provides an initial indication of how mobility can be best shaped in the future. It enables you to readily calculate your energy consumption and CO₂ emissions as well as the money and time expended by your transport and travel activities. You need only enter four criteria to obtain an initial estimate.

The "Tools" heading contains current environmental data plus trips on how to undertake more detailed impact studies. "Tip & tricks" contains rationale and arguments for management decision-making along with specific examples of sustainable mobility.
