SBB is working proactively together with customers to avoid, separate and recycle waste.
You can only feel at home on a train if it’s clean. So numerous cleaning staff ensure that trains and stations are kept clean every day. Disposal and recycling of used materials is also an important aspect of ecological responsibility and is a high priority at SBB. For SBB, sustainable materials policy means avoiding or reducing waste where possible. That also includes separating and recycling waste and disposing of mixed waste in line with environmental standards. The topic of disposal and reuse does not only affect SBB’s operations and maintenance materials. Increasing amounts of waste on trains and at stations also pose a great challenge. The waste disposed of annually would fill around 2,700 freight wagons. These could form a train over 30 kilometres long, which would completely fill the line from Bern to Biel/Bienne. As a customer, you can also make a contribution by taking your waste with you when you alight from a train and sorting it at recycling points in the station.
