Sustainable construction sites.
SBB is committed to decarbonised litter-free construction sites with low light emissions.
When tracks or other railway installations have to be repaired, this often has negative impacts on the environment, staff and local residents. SBB is therefore continually improving the environmental conditions on its construction sites. The company intends to operate resource-saving CO2-free construction sites by 2040. As long as safety is ensured, SBB reduces the lighting on construction sites to a minimum to save energy and protect people and animals from the negative impacts of artificial light. Mobile waste disposal buckets are used to ensure that no waste collects around construction sites due to littering.
Life Cycle Assessment
Life cycle assessments are fundamental for evaluating the environmental impact of construction projects and project variants. They enable fact-based decisions to foster sustainability. The SBB Emission Factors 2025 list available under “Downloads” contains several hundred data sets for railway-specific components and construction processes (in german, french and italian). It complements the Swiss KBOB list and shall be used in the planning of SBB infrastructure projects.
