Switzerland transports most dangerous goods by rail. This represents a very safe and environmentally friendly approach. These are mostly flammable liquids, such as petrol and heating oil, but also chemical goods and gases. SBB complies with the Regulation concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail, which have been ratified by 45 member states. Every year, an SBB team inspects around 7,000 dangerous goods wagons from all railway companies operating on SBB’s network to ensure they comply with the legal requirements. The train monitoring systems also keep a check on the wagons automatically.
