The Léman 2030 project will enable the Lake Geneva metropolitan region to catch up in terms of its railway infrastructure. The programme is not just about doubling the number of seats for journeys between Lausanne and Geneva, but also about guaranteeing that the cantons of Geneva and Vaud are given a role within the highly efficient Swiss railway system. By enabling Lausanne to accommodate 400-metre-long trains and transport up to 1,300 passengers, it will be possible for Switzerland's second-largest economic region to maintain frequent links to Bern and Zurich.
Modernisation of Lausanne–Renens, the main railway hub of French-speaking Switzerland, is vital to ensuring that the entire SBB network can continue functioning at the national level. It will also help to prevent a situation where a two-tier system is created. All of this is why the Canton of Vaud firmly supports the Léman 2030 programme and is campaigning for a decrease in the journey time between Lausanne and Bern, which is just as important.
