The development of the Lausanne-Geneva line has been underway since 2009 under the impetus of the Confederation and the Cantons of Geneva and Vaud. A series of improvements have already been made (creation of crossing points at Mies and Chambésy, overtaking track at Founex, grade separation and 4th track at Lausanne-Renens, etc.), and other major development projects are under way (Geneva and Lausanne stations in particular).

This dynamic is now continuing in the Morges region (Denges - Morges - Perroy). The development of rail infrastructure is necessary in this sector because of the RER Vaud and the overlap of different types of traffic (mainline, regional, freight transport), which makes this section one of the busiest on the line.

The aim of the project is to create two new lanes over a distance of around 15km between Morges and Perroy:

• Approximately 13 km of track between Morges station and Perroy, including approximately 8 km of tunnel track.
• Approximately 2km of track between Allaman and Féchy (diversion of the existing line).

The creation of this new line will enable:

• to increase the frequency of the Geneva-Lausanne RegioExpress and Geneva-Lausanne InterCity trains to ¼ of an hour (compared with ½ hour today).
• Systematically introduce the ½ hour frequency at all Lausanne-Morges-Allaman RER stations.
• improve freight transport capacity on the Lausanne-Geneva route.

It should be noted that these improvements are also dependent on the completion of other projects to increase capacity on the route (Lausanne, Geneva, Nyon, etc.), which are scheduled to come into service before the new double track between Morges and Perroy.

The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have carried out a preliminary study on the Morges-Perroy section between 2022 and the beginning of 2024, which the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) has taken note of.

SBB should receive the mandate in September 2024 and funding to move on to the preliminary design stage, which will enable the costs, route and plans to be refined.

This would be followed a few years later by the construction project stage, culminating in the planning permission procedure and public enquiry.

For the moment, there is no timetable for completion as such.

During these various phases, SBB is committed to a duty of information and transparency with the Canton of Vaud and the 13 municipalities concerned by the route on any development of the project.
